A general term for fish in the family Gasterosteidae of the order Syngnathus. It is so named because of the prominent spines on its dorsal, pelvic and anal fins. It is also called hariuo (needle fish). In English, it is called stickle back. This species is widely distributed in Asia, Europe and North America from the mid-latitudes northwards, and is known for its unique spawning habits. All are small fish with a thin caudal peduncle, measuring 5-8 cm in length, and have smooth skin, but a row of large bony scale plates that are modified scales on the sides of their bodies. ヨウジウオ目トゲウオ科Gasterosteidaeの魚の総称。背びれ,腹びれ,しりびれなどのとげが目だつのでこの名がある。ハリウオ(針魚)とも呼ばれる。英語でもstickle back(とげの生えた背中)という。この仲間はアジア,ヨーロッパ,北アメリカの中緯度以北に広く分布し,特異な産卵習性によって知られる。いずれも全長5~8cm,尾柄の細い小魚で滑らかな皮膚をもつが,体側にうろこの変形した大きな骨質鱗板が1列並ぶ。
