Born April 26, 1868 in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
[Died] December 23, 1938, Virgin Islands, Charlotte Amalie. American novelist. Graduated from Harvard University (1890). Lectured in English literature at the University of Chicago (1993-1923). While there, she published many novels set in Chicago, dealing with the modern society poisoned by commercialism and industrialism. In addition to her most famous work, The Master of the Inn (08), she also wrote The Common Lot (04), The Memoirs of an American Citizen (05), and One Woman's Life (13).

Born October 9, 1854 in Huntington, Ohio
[Died] March 31, 1929. American lawyer, banker, and diplomat in Paris. Graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University. Became a lawyer in 1878, and was active in banking and business. Served as treasurer of the Society for Savings from 1886 to 1894, and later became president and chairman of the bank. Served as president of the American Bankers Association in 1901, and as Ohio's chief executive from 1903 to 1906. Served as ambassador to France from 1912 to 1914, and worked hard to provide relief to war victims at the beginning of World War I. After the war, he served as ambassador to France again from 1921 to 1929.

[Died] October 1674, Devonshire. English poet and clergyman. He graduated from Cambridge University and became a clergyman, but was removed from his position by the republican government because he was a royalist. He was reinstated at the Restoration. He was the leading "Royalist poet" in the lineage of B. Johnson, and wrote poems about love for women against pastoral backgrounds. His representative collection of poems is "Hesperides" (1648).

アメリカの弁護士,銀行家,外交官。オハイオ・ウェズレイアン大学卒業。 1878年弁護士になり,銀行業や実業方面でも活躍。 86~94年ソサエティ・フォー・セービングで会計係をつとめ,のちに同銀行の頭取,会長となった。 1901年アメリカ銀行協会会長,03~06年オハイオ州行政長官をつとめ,12~14年フランス駐在大使となり,第1次世界大戦勃発当初の戦争犠牲者救済活動に尽力。戦後も 21~29年再度フランス駐在大使をつとめた。

イギリスの詩人,聖職者。ケンブリッジ大学を出て牧師となったが,王党派であったため共和政府によって職を奪われた。王政復古によって復職。 B.ジョンソンの系譜に連なる「王党派詩人」の第一人者で牧歌的背景のなかで女性への愛を歌った。『ヘスペリデス』 Hesperides (1648) が代表的詩集。
