Emil Brunner

Swiss Protestant theologian. Born December 23rd in Winterthur, northeast of Zurich. After graduating from university, he worked as a high school teacher in England, and from 1924 became a professor of systematic theology and practical theology at the University of Zurich. He participated in the early dialectical theology movement led by Barth and others, and published Mysticism and Word (1924), which criticized Schleiermacher. He debated with Barth over the validity of natural theology, and published Nature and Grace (1934), which recognized reason as the connecting point between God and humans, but was refuted by Barth in an essay called No. Since then, he has often debated with Barth, and is seen by some as Barth's enemy. He was also enthusiastic about practical missionary work, and from 1953 to 1955 (Showa 28-30), he came to Japan and taught as a professor at the International Christian University, where he had a wide influence. He left behind many books, including "Truth as an Encounter" (1938) and "Dogmatics" in three volumes (1946-1960). He died on April 6 in Zurich.

スイスのプロテスタントの神学者。12月23日チューリヒの東北ウィンタートゥールに生まれる。大学卒業後イギリスで高校教師をしたのち、1924年からチューリヒ大学の組織神学と実践神学の教授。バルトらの初期の弁証法神学の運動に参加、シュライエルマハーを批判した『神秘主義と言葉』(1924)を発表した。自然神学の可否をめぐってバルトと論争し、神と人間の結合点として理性を認めた『自然と恩寵(おんちょう)』(1934)を刊行、バルトから『否(ナイン)』という論文で反論を受けた。以来バルトとしばしば論争し、バルトの敵(かたき)役との見方もある。実践的宣教活動にも熱意をもち、1953~1955年(昭和28~30)には来日して国際基督(キリスト)教大学教授として教え、広い影響を与えた。『出会いとしての真理』(1938)、『教義学』全3巻(1946~1960)など多くの著書を残した。4月6日チューリヒにて死去。
