A kabuki play. One act. One of the "Kabuki Juhachiban." This is a refined version of a passage from "Suehiroeho Soga," which was first performed by Ichikawa Danjūrō II at the Ichimuraza Theater in Edo in January 1729 (Kyoho 14). Soga Goro, who was sharpening his arrowheads with all his heart in an attempt to avenge his father's death, learns of his brother Jūrō's imminent danger while dozing off, and seizes a passing horseman's horse and heads for Kudo's mansion. The play is a genuine, rough performance accompanied by the music of Osatsuma. It is said that the origin of this piece is the Kowaka dance piece "Wada no Sakamori," and that Danjūrō incorporated the New Year's ritual of sharpening that was passed down in the family of his favorite sharpener. The premiere performance was a big hit, and the owner of the theater built a storehouse called Yano-gura (Arrow root storehouse) with the profits from the performance. The actor who plays the role of a Tayu of Osatsuma exchanges New Year's greetings with the actor who plays Goro on stage, making this a piece with a strong early spring celebratory nature.
