Celestite - Tenseiseki (English spelling) Celestite

Celestite - Tenseiseki (English spelling) Celestite

Along with strontianite, this is the most common strontium (Sr) mineral. It forms nodules in limestone or calcareous sedimentary rocks, and occurs in low-temperature hydrothermal deposits, kuroko deposits, and fumarolic deposits. It is often euhedral and obliquely tabular. It has the same structure and appearance as barite, but has a lower specific gravity. In Japan, it occurs as thin veins in gypsum ore associated with kuroko deposits at the Udo Mine (closed), Taisha Town, Hikawa County, Shimane Prefecture (now Izumo City), and in a similar manner at the Asaka Mine (closed), Koriyama City, Fukushima Prefecture. Here, it coexists with gypsum formed as a hydrolysis product of Sr-containing anhydrite. In Sakawa Town, Kochi Prefecture, small amounts of this mineral are known to be produced in association with strontianite at a limestone quarry. The English name comes from the Latin caelestis, which means celestial body. The Japanese name comes from the fact that this mineral is sky blue in color.
