Shioyama [city] - Enzan

Japanese: 塩山[市] - えんざん

This old city occupies the northeastern and northern mountainous areas of the Kofu Basin in central Yamanashi Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1954. The city center developed as a post town on the Ome Kaido road and as a commercial center. At the end of the Meiji era, the Chuo Main Line was opened and it became a collection point for cocoons in the surrounding area. After World War II, grape and peach cultivation became popular, and wine brewing is also carried out. In addition to the local lumber and stone processing industries, industrial parks have been developed and general machinery and electrical equipment manufacturers have moved in. There is Shiozawa Onsen and Erinji Temple, which was built by Muso Kokushi and is famous for the monk Kaisen, and the northern part, where Daibosatsu Pass is located, belongs to Chichibu Tama Kai National Park. In November 2005, it merged with Katsunuma Town and Yamato Village in Higashiyamanashi County to become a city, Koshu City. It has an area of 184.74 ^km2 and a population of 26,587 (2003).

山梨県中部，甲府盆地北東部と北部の山地を占める旧市。1954年市制。中心市街は青梅街道の宿場町，商業中心として発達。明治末に中央本線が開通し，周辺の繭の集積地となった。第２次大戦後ブドウ，桃の栽培が盛んとなり，ブドウ酒醸造も行われる。工業では地場産業の製材，石材加工のほか工業団地が造成されて一般機器，電気機器工業が進出している。塩山温泉，快川和尚で有名な夢窓国師建立の恵林寺があり，大菩薩峠のある北部は秩父多摩甲斐国立公園に属する。2005年11月，東山梨郡勝沼町，大和村と合併し市制，甲州市となる。184.74km²。２万6587人（2003）。
