Shutaro Miyake

Theater critic. Born in Hyogo Prefecture. Graduated from the Department of Literature at Keio University in 1918 (Taisho 7). While still a student, he began writing theater critiques for the Engei Gaho magazine. Registered with the Mainichi Newspaper Company, he published theater critiques of Kabuki and Bunraku in newspapers and magazines, and while providing detailed analysis of the forms, he opened up new horizons in theater criticism with his new perspective and unique writing style. He also established his own position as a critic with Bunraku no Kenkyu (Bunraku Studies) (1930), which portrayed the people of Bunraku with a warm eye. He also worked on editing the second edition of Engeki Shincho. His books include Engeki Orai (Theater Orai), Engeki Fifty-Year History (Theater 50-Year History), Haiyuu Taidanki (A Tale of Actors), and Kabuki Kenkyu (Kabuki Research), and his autobiography Kangeki Hanseiki (Half a Century of Theater Viewing) (1948).
