Uranus - Uranosu (English spelling) Ūranos

The oldest male god in Greek mythology, meaning "sky". Born from the earth goddess Gaia, he married Gaia and gave birth to three hecatonchires (100 hands), three Cyclopes (thunder, lightning), Oceanus, Tethys, Koios, Phoebe, Hyperion, Theia, Kleios, Rhea, Iapetus, and the giant god Kronos. However, he pushed all of his children into the underworld, Tartarus, so Gaia decided to take revenge and consulted with her children in the underworld. Only the youngest, Kronos, agreed. He cut off the penis of his sleeping father Uranus with a diamond axe given to him by Gaia and threw it into the sea. As a result, Cronus became the ruler of the gods in place of Uranus, but later he fought with his son Zeus, was defeated, and was cast into Tartarus again. It is said that the goddess of love, Aphrodite, was born from the phallus of Uranus, which was cut off and thrown into the sea.

「天空」を意味するギリシア神話最古の男神。大地の女神ガイアから生まれ、そのガイアを妻として3人のヘカトンケイル（100本の手）、3人のキクロペス（雷、稲妻）のほか、オケアノス、テテュス、コイオス、フォイベ、ヒペリオン、テイア、クレイオス、レア、イアペトス、それにクロノスの巨神（ティタン）たちを得た。しかし、彼が生まれ出た子を片端から地下の冥界(めいかい)タルタロスへ押し込めたので、ガイアは復讐(ふくしゅう)を決意して、地底の子供たちに諮(はか)った。すると末のクロノスだけが同調した。彼はガイアから渡された金剛の斧(おの)で、眠りこけていた父ウラノスの男根を切り落とし、それを海に投げ捨てた。これにより、クロノスはウラノスにかわる神々の支配者となったが、のちにわが子ゼウスと争い、これに破れてふたたびタルタロスに落とされた。なお、切断されて海に投げられたウラノスの男根から生まれたのが、愛の女神アフロディテと伝えられている。
