Ayimag - Aimaku (English spelling)

In Mongolian, it means a part or tribe. It is also the name of an administrative division. During the Yuan Dynasty, it meant territory including tribes and the pastures on which they lived, and was written in Chinese as "Aima." In the 17th century, after Inner and Outer Mongolia were annexed to the Qing Dynasty, Aimak was also used to mean an administrative division, and Outer Mongolia and the Four Khanates were also called the Four Aimak. Currently, Aimak is used to mean "county" in Mongolia, and to mean "league" in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region of China.

モンゴル語で部分、部族の意。また行政区画の名称。元朝時代には、部族と、その生活する牧地をも含めた所領を意味し、漢字で愛馬とも記された。17世紀、内、外モンゴルが清(しん)朝に帰属してのち、アイマクは行政区画の意味にも用いられ、外モンゴル、四ハン部は四アイマクともよばれた。現在アイマクは、モンゴル国では「県」の意味で、また中国の内モンゴル自治区では「盟」の意味で用いられている。
