A general term for crustaceans belonging to the decapod families Diogenidae, Paguridae, Parapaguridae, Coenobitidae, and Pylochelidae. Usually, they fit into snail shells because their abdomens are soft, but as they grow, they change the size of the shell they fit into. It has been observed that hermit crabs (illustration) use their claws to measure the size of the shell they fit into to match their own body size.
