Bacteria that grow in the presence of free oxygen. Bacteria that cannot grow at all without oxygen are called obligate aerobes, and Bacillus subtilis, Acetobacterium and Mycobacterium tuberculosis are typical examples. Many bacteria, including pathogenic bacteria, can grow in anaerobic conditions, but unless anaerobic conditions are forcibly created, they are facultative anaerobes that obtain energy through efficient aerobic respiration. Aerobic bacteria and facultative anaerobic bacteria have the cytochrome system and perform aerobic respiration. →Anaerobic bacteria→Related topics: Corynebacterium diphtheriae | Neisseria meningitidis | Bordetella pertussis | Mitochondria Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
