This butterfly belongs to the family Lycaenidae of the order Lepidoptera of the class Insecta. It is widely distributed from southern Europe, Africa, southern Asia to Australia, and is also found in Hawaii. It is not distributed in North or South America. In Japan, this species can overwinter in the frost-free areas of the Pacific coast from the southern tip (northern limit) of the Boso Peninsula to the south. It is often seen from summer to autumn in areas north of the Boso Peninsula, but these are thought to be individuals or their descendants that have dispersed from the wintering grounds. It cannot survive the winter in cold regions and die. Wing spread is about 31 millimeters. The upper surface of the wings is purple-blue in males and black-brown in females, with the center of the forewings being largely indigo-blue. The underside of both males and females is gray-white or light brown with brown wavy markings, and the Japanese name is derived from this feature. The larvae mainly feed on cultivated legumes such as hyacinth bean, adzuki bean, broad bean, pea, cowpea, and kidney bean, but also feed on wild plants such as kudzu, sophora japonica, and wild kudzu. They are active as long as the temperature conditions allow, and do not have a specific hibernation form. [Takashi Shiramizu] Found in warm areas south of the Boso Peninsula. The upper surface of the male's wings is deep purple, while that of the female is blackish brown. The underside of both sexes has a grayish white to light brown background with brown wavy markings.
