Yao [town] - Yao

Japanese: 八尾[町] - やつお

A former town in Fushiki District, southern Toyama Prefecture. Most of the area is made up of the Hida Highlands, and the main settlement, Yao, is located at the mouth of the valley where the Ida River flows into the Toyama Plain, through which the Takayama Main Line passes. The town is known for its handmade Japanese paper, as well as rice and vegetables. An industrial complex has been developed and businesses have moved in. It is the home of the Etchu Owarabushi dance, and the beginning of September is called Kaze no Bon, when the whole town comes together to dance. In April 2005, it was incorporated into Toyama City along with Osawano Town and Oyama Town in Kamishinkawa District, Funaka Town in Fushiki District, Yamada Village, and Hosoiri Village. ^{236.86 km2} . 富山県南部，婦負(ねい)郡の旧町。飛騨高地が大半を占め，井田川が富山平野に出る谷口に主集落八尾があり高山本線が通じる。手すき和紙を特産し，米，野菜を産する。工業団地が造成され，企業が進出している。〈越中おわら節〉の本場で，９月初めを〈風の盆〉といい，町内総出で踊る。2005年４月上新川郡大沢野町，大山町，婦負郡婦中町，山田村，細入村と富山市へ編入。236.86km²。２万2463人（2003）。
