In Greek mythology, he is the sun god. He is the son of the Titans Hyperion and Theia, and the brother of the moon goddess Selene and the dawn goddess Eos. He married Perseis, daughter of Oceanus, and had a son Aeetes and daughters Circe and Pasiphae. He also gave birth to Phaethon and the Heliades to Clymene, daughter of Oceanus. He has four horses pull a golden chariot, crossing the sky from east to west every day, entering Oceanus at sunset, and sailing his chariot on a huge golden cup on the current of the ocean that surrounds the world, then returning to the east. It was believed that no incident on earth could be hidden from this god's eyes. The story of him lending his chariot to Phaethon and causing a fire on the world is famous. In Rome, he was identified with Sol, and later became confused with Apollo. Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
