Yagyu Clan

Japanese: 柳生氏 - やぎゅううじ
Yagyu Clan
A hereditary daimyo of Yamato Province in the Edo Period. It is said that the origins of the Yagyu clan date back to the Heian Period, when Sugawara Nagayoshi entered the area of Koyagyu-go (later Yagyu Village) in Yamato Province, which was located in present-day Nara City, as a magistrate. During the Sengoku Period, Muneyoshi became independent and established the Yagyu Shinkage-ryu school. He began by teaching swordsmanship to Tokugawa Ieyasu in 1594, and later became the swordsmanship instructor for the Tokugawa Shogunate. In 1636, Munenori became a daimyo with 10,000 koku of rice, which was later increased to 12,500 koku, but as the territory was divided among his family, Munenori's son, Jubei Mitsuyoshi, became a hatamoto with 8,300 koku of rice. In 1668, Munefuyu, the younger brother of Sangenji, was again ranked as a feudal lord with 10,000 koku of rice. He became the lord of the Yagyu clan, which held 10,000 koku of rice in the Soekami and Yamabe districts of Yamato Province and the Soraku district of Yamashiro Province, and this succession continued for generations until the Meiji Restoration. → Yagyu Munegen / Yagyu Munenori / Yagyu Jubei / Yagyu Munefuyu / Yagyu school → Related topics Yagyu
