A Greek Church Father who lived from about 150 to about 215. He is said to have been born in Athens. He converted to Christianity at a young age and traveled around the country in search of a teacher. He studied under Pantainos, the head of the catechetical school in Alexandria, and succeeded Pantainos at the end of the 2nd century. One of his students was Origen. He was driven out of Alexandria by persecution around 202 and fled to Cappadocia, where he died. Among his writings, Protrepticus (Exhortation), is an elegant work aimed at the Greeks, pointing out the errors of paganism and encouraging them to embrace Christianity.
