Ganden Monastery - Gandenji (English spelling) dga-ldan

The head temple of the Yellow Hat (Gelug) sect of Tibetan Buddhism. The temple's name means "Temple of Joy". It is located on the top of Mount Ongori, 40 km east-northeast of Lhasa, the capital of the Tibet Autonomous Region in China. Its correct name is Ganden Nanpal Gyalwei Ling, and it is one of the four main temples of the sect along with Sera, Tashilhunpo, and Repung monasteries. It was built in 1409 by Tsongkhapa, the founder of the Dalai Lama, when he was 53 years old, and thereafter he used it as a base to promote the sect. The first head temple was his disciple Mkhas-Grub, and for generations, virtuous people have served as head priests, and he became regent when the Dalai was vacant. It is a temple of learning where only exoteric Buddhism is taught. There is also a temple of the same name in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, which was the central temple of learning there. Recently, a Buddhist university has also been established at the temple.

チベット仏教黄帽(こうぼう)派（ゲルク派）の大本山。寺名は「歓喜寺(かんきじ)」の意。中国、チベット自治区の区府ラサ市の東北東40キロメートルのオンゴリ山頂にある。正しくはガンデン・ナンパル・ギャルウェイ・リンdga-ldan rnam-par rgyal-bai gliといい、セラ寺、タシルンポ寺、レプン寺とともに同派の四大本山をなす。1409年、ダライ・ラマの始祖にあたるツォンカパが53歳のときに建立し、以後ここを拠点として同派を宣揚した。高弟ケードゥプmkhas-grubが初代となり、代々高徳の者が法主を務め、ダライ空席のときの摂政(せっしょう)となった。顕教のみを学ぶ学問寺である。なお、モンゴルのウランバートルにも同名の寺があり、同地の教学の中心寺院であった。近時、同寺に仏教大学も付設された。
