A former town in Shimomashiki County, central Kumamoto Prefecture. Occupying the mountainous area upstream of the Midorikawa River, it was once a trading area with the Gokanosho area. It is surrounded by extensive forests, producing cedar and cypress, and the wood processing industry is thriving.
