Synodic period

The average period until a planet's relative position to Earth becomes the same, such as from one conjunction to the next conjunction or from one opposition to the next. The synodic periods of the planets are 115.9 days for Mercury, 583.9 days for Venus, 779.9 days for Mars, 398.9 days for Jupiter, 378.1 days for Saturn, 369.6 days for Uranus, and 367.5 days for Neptune. Incidentally, the synodic period of Pluto, which was reclassified from a planet to a dwarf planet at the General Assembly of the International Astronomical Union (IAU) in August 2006, is 366.7 days.

In general, there is a relationship of 1/ C = 1/ E -1/ P between a planet's orbital period P , the Earth's orbital period E , and the synodic period C.

惑星が地球に対して、合(ごう)から次の合、あるいは衝(しょう)から次の衝というように相対的位置が同じになるまでの平均周期。各惑星の会合周期は、水星115.9日、金星583.9日、火星779.9日、木星398.9日、土星378.1日、天王星369.6日、海王星367.5日となっている。ちなみに、2006年8月の国際天文学連合（IAU）総会において、それまでの惑星から準惑星のカテゴリーに入れられた冥王星(めいおうせい)の会合周期は366.7日である。

　一般に惑星の公転周期P、地球の公転周期E、会合周期Cの間には1/C=1/E-1/Pの関係がある。
