Montgomery, Lucy Maud
Born November 30, 1874 in Clifton, Canada
[Died] April 24, 1942, Toronto Canadian novelist. Known for Anne of Green Gables, published in 1908. The story of Anne, a red-haired girl who comes to a village from an orphanage, causes a commotion with her words and actions, making the villagers nervous, but eventually love is born. Montgomery's own experiences are also included in the story, and it remains popular to this day. She lived in Cavendish, Prince Edward Island, until the age of 17, and went on to college in Charlottetown and university in Halifax, the capital of Nova Scotia. After graduating, she worked as a teacher for three years, and then ran the post office in the village. At the age of 37, she married the Reverend Ewan MacDonald and moved to Toronto. She later published a series of books, including Anne's Dream House, as well as the more autobiographical Emily series.
