Cape Motata

Japanese: 茂津多岬 - もったみさき
Cape Motata

A cape jutting out into the Sea of Japan on the west coast of the Oshima Peninsula in southwest Hokkaido. The Kariba Mountains, which form the border between the Hiyama Subprefectural Bureau and the Shiribeshi General Subprefectural Bureau, form cliffs facing the Sea of Japan, and it was known as one of the three most dangerous capes of Western Ezo, along with Cape Kamui and Cape Ofuyumi. Construction of the section of National Route 229 between Setana Town (now Setana Town) and Shimamaki Village took 16 years and was completed in 1976. The cape is accessed through the Motsuta Tunnel (total length 1,974 meters), one of the longest automobile tunnels in Hokkaido. The entire cape is part of the Kariba Motsuta Prefectural Natural Park.
