A general term for the ethnic groups living in the tropical forest area of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, south of the main Congo River and north of the Kasai and Sankuru Rivers. The population is estimated at about 4.8 million. It includes the Bokote, Ekonda, Boliah, Sengele, Ntomba, Ndengese, Songomeno, Mbore, Bongandu, Boyela, Nkutu, and Tetera Kus. They speak Mongo or Nkundu, which belongs to the Benue-Kongo language family of the Niger-Congo language family, as their common language. They cultivate cassava and bananas, but also gather wild plants, fish, and hunt. They live in a patrilineal society, and polygamy is common. There are no organizations larger than the lineage, and power, including religion, is held by elders. Ancestor worship is strong, and magic and divination are common. They have a rich oral tradition, songs, and dances.
