Fétis, François-Joseph
Born: March 25, 1784, Mont
[Died] March 26, 1871, Brussels. Belgian musicologist, organist, and composer. He studied at the conservatories of Paris and Vienna, and became a professor at the Paris Conservatoire in 1821 and director of the Brussels Conservatory in 1833. He founded the musicology journal Le Buis musicale and wrote many books, including the eight-volume Biographie universelle des musiciens (Dictionary of Musicians) (1837-1844) and the five-volume Histoire générale de la musique (Histoire générale de la musique) (1869-1876).
