A sect of Russian spiritualist Christians. Founded in the second half of the 18th century, it spread among peasants and merchants, and at one time had one million adherents. It rejected the church system and liturgy, basing its faith solely on the Bible. It had no clergy, replaced by leaders called "elders." It suffered persecution from the imperial government and emigrated to the Caucasus and Siberia. It split into several sects, and currently exists mainly in the Caucasus and Ukraine.
