Japanese: 蚊やり - かやり

In summer, mosquitoes and blackflies are smoked to scare them away. This method is used in many places, and in Japan, the name appears in the Manyoshu. It is also called mosquito smoke, mosquito kusube, mosquito yaribi, or mosquito fire, and generally involves burning pieces of wood in a hearth or brazier, or smoking mugwort and fanning the smoke with a large fan. In the Edo period, sawdust mixed with sulfur powder was also used. Mosquito nets were also in widespread use at this time, but they were expensive for ordinary people, so it is said that paper nets and mosquito squirts were mainly used.

夏季，カやブユを追い払うため煙でいぶすこと。この方法は各地で行われ，日本では《万葉集》にその名が見られる。蚊いぶし，蚊くすべ，蚊やり火，蚊火（かび）などとも呼ばれ，一般に木片をいろりや火桶でたいたり，ヨモギなどをいぶして，大型のうちわであおいだりした。江戸時代には，おがくずに硫黄の粉をまぜたものも使われた。このころには蚊帳も一般に普及していたが，庶民にとっては高価なもので，もっぱら紙帳（しちよう）や蚊やりを用いていたといわれる。
