A mountain range in central France that forms the northeastern edge of the Massif Central. It borders the Paris Basin to the north. Its highest point is Mont Bois du Roi (902m). It is made up of gneiss and granite, and the soil is acidic and poor, but there are also areas covered with forests and heath. It produces timber and is a major cattle breeding area. The Yonne and Armançon, tributaries of the Seine, and the Arreux, a tributary of the Loire, flow through the area, making it a popular weekend getaway for Parisians.
