調性音楽の二つの音種属の一つ。調性は主音、属音（主音の完全五度上の音）、下属音（主音の完全五度下の音）、およびそれらをもととする主和音、属和音、下属和音の主要三和音の機能によって確立し、そこから得られる基本音列が長音階と短音階である。長音階に基づく曲を長調の曲という。なお、このように長調と短調は本来同一の基礎のうえにあり、短調を長調の変種と考える和声一元論に対し、両者をまったく対等な二元的現象としてとらえる和声二元論の考え方もある。
