Fukushima City is located in the center of the Nakadori region in central Fukushima Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1924. The western part is mountainous land that continues to Lake Inawashiro, the eastern part is the Abukuma highlands, and in the center is the Koriyama Basin with the Abukuma River flowing north. The city center in the basin was a former post station on the Oshu Kaido road, and developed with the opening of the basin by the Asaka Canal and the establishment of a chemical factory that used the canal's electricity. It has also been a silk-reeling and silk-weaving production area since ancient times, and after World War II, the chemical fiber, metal, and electrical equipment industries also developed. It was designated a new industrial city (1964) and a Koriyama Regional Technopolis (1986), and the development of industrial parks has progressed. It is the second largest city in the prefecture in terms of manufactured goods shipment value, at 802.8 billion yen (2003). The city is an important transportation hub where the Tohoku Shinkansen, Tohoku Main Line, and Tohoku Expressway pass, and where the Ban'etsu East Line, Ban'etsu West Line, Suigun Line, and Ban'etsu Expressway branch off. It is the economic center of the prefecture, surpassing Fukushima City. It is home to Kaiseiyama Park and Bandai Atami Onsen. The city suffered damage in the Great East Japan Earthquake. 757.20 ^km2 . 338,712 people (2010).

福島県中部，中通りの中央にある市。1924年市制。西部は猪苗代湖に続く山地，東部は阿武隈高地で，中部に阿武隈川が北流する郡山盆地がある。盆地中央の中心市街は奥州街道の旧宿駅で，安積(あさか)疎水による盆地の開田と，疎水の電力を利用する化学工場の立地を機に発展。古くからの製糸・絹織物産地でもあり，第２次世界大戦後は化繊・金属・電気機器工業も発達。新産業都市（1964年），郡山地域テクノポリス（1986年）に指定され，工業団地の整備が進んだ。製造品出荷額では8028億円（2003）を上げ，県内２位を占めている。東北新幹線，東北本線，東北自動車道が通じ，磐越東線，磐越西線，水郡線，磐越自動車道が分岐する交通要地で，県内では福島市に優る経済の中心地をなしている。開成山公園，磐梯熱海温泉がある。東日本大震災で，市内において被害が発生。757.20km²。33万8712人（2010）。
