Moratuwa (English spelling)

Japanese: モラトゥワ（英語表記）Moratuwa

A commercial and industrial city in southwestern Sri Lanka facing the Indian Ocean. Located about 16 km south of Colombo. Formerly a producer of furniture, woodcarvings, coconuts, and spices, the city now has factories producing rubber products, tires, batteries, and other products, forming part of the industrial zone south of Colombo. Fishing is also thriving, and the city is also a distribution center for agricultural products such as rice and coconuts. Population: 170,000 (1990 estimate).

スリランカ南西部，インド洋にのぞむ商工業都市。コロンボ南方約 16kmに位置。かつては家具，木彫工芸品，ココナッツ，香料などの産地であったが，現在はこれに加え，ゴム製品，タイヤ，蓄電池などの工場が立地し，コロンボ南部の工業地帯の一部を形成。漁業も盛んで，米，ココナッツなど農産物集散の中心地でもある。人口 17万 (1990推計) 。
