…Watarimono is a general term for tightrope walkers, and includes those who walk on ropes and wires (abbreviated as gane), those who walk wearing geta, and those who perform movements with cloth. In particular, the “Aotake Watari” (Blue Bamboo Walking), in which the performer walks while swinging a thick bamboo pole from both ends, is a uniquely Japanese piece that was first performed in Edo in 1783 (Tenmei 3) by Kirin Shigezo. Among the ladder acts, the piece “Peter,” named after a foreign acrobat, involves setting up an unsupported ladder, climbing it while swinging it, and performing handstands on top. This trick was inherited from the German Peter Green, who came to Japan in 1902. …

…渡りものは綱渡りの総称で，綱と針金(略してガネ)とがあり，足駄を履いて渡るものや布ざらしの所作をするものなどがある。とくに両端をつった太い竹の前後を揺すって渡りながら手事をする〈青竹渡り〉は，1783年(天明3)麒麟繁蔵が江戸で初演した日本独特の演目である。梯子芸のなかで外国曲芸師の名前をつけた演目〈ピーター〉の芸は，何の支えもないはしごを立て，揺すりながら登り，上で逆立ちをしたりするもので，1902年来日のドイツ人ピーター･グリーンから継がれてきたものである。…
