…Watarimono is a general term for tightrope walkers, and includes those who walk on ropes and wires (abbreviated as gane), those who walk wearing geta, and those who perform movements with cloth. In particular, the “Aotake Watari” (Blue Bamboo Walking), in which the performer walks while swinging a thick bamboo pole from both ends, is a uniquely Japanese piece that was first performed in Edo in 1783 (Tenmei 3) by Kirin Shigezo. Among the ladder acts, the piece “Peter,” named after a foreign acrobat, involves setting up an unsupported ladder, climbing it while swinging it, and performing handstands on top.
