In 1735, Jean Baptiste du Halde (1674-1743), who edited volumes 9-26 of the Jesuit Letters, published the four large volumes of the Encyclopedia of China, which compiled the knowledge of China that Westerners had gained up to that time. The elaborate copperplate maps inserted in the book were supervised by Jean Baptiste Bourguignon d'Anville (1697-1782), who was known as the leading cartographer in Europe at the time.
