Mount Tateshina

Japanese: 蓼科山 - たてしなやま
Mount Tateshina

This mountain is located in the north end of the Yatsugatake mountain range in central-eastern Nagano Prefecture. It is 2,531 meters above sea level. It is a volcano of the Mt. Fuji type, continuing to the Yatsugatake mountain range to the south, but forming a vast foothills on three sides, it is also called Suwa Fuji. It is a Mt. Fuji type up to around the eighth station, but above that it shows the form of a bell-shaped volcano. The summit is mostly rocky, and there is the inner shrine of Tateshina Shrine. Mt. Fuji, the Japanese Alps, Mt. Asama volcano, the Chichibu mountain range, etc. can be seen. There are many stone pines near the summit, but the mountainside is forested with spruce, silver fir, Erman's birch, and white birch. The northeastern foothills are called the Higashi Tateshina Plateau, and the southern foothills are called the Tateshina Plateau. There are hiking trails from Tateshina Onsen and Ogawara Pass, and the one-way journey takes about three hours.
