Monel metal

Monel metal
A corrosion-resistant alloy containing nickel (Ni62-70%), copper (Cu30-35%), and other elements such as iron, aluminum, and manganese. It was named after A. Monel, who reduced ore containing Ni:Cu = 7:3 at the International Nickel Company in Canada (1905), and since then, various countries have produced the same or improved alloys. Regular Monel (Monel400) is a strong alloy with a tensile strength of 588 MPa and a Brinell hardness of H B 150, but its distinctive feature is its resistance to corrosion in seawater, acids, and alkalis, and it is used mostly as a structural material in the chemical industry. R Monel (Monel R-405, with 0.04% added sulfur) is known as a free-cutting Monel, and has good machinability. K Monel (Monel K-500, with 3% aluminum added) is age-hardened by tempering after quenching, reaching a tensile strength of 120 kg/mm 2 and an H B of 300 or more, and is used for non-magnetic aircraft parts and corrosion-resistant machine parts, while S Monel (with 4% silicon and 2% iron added) and Monel with 2% silicon and 1.5% iron added are used for casting, also for wear-resistant and corrosion-resistant parts. JIS standardizes Ni-Cu alloys equivalent to Monel 400 and Monel K-500.
