A former town in Kitakuwada County, located in central Kyoto Prefecture, to the north of Kyoto City. Occupying the Tanba highlands upstream of the Oi River, the town is a thriving forestry town, producing Kitayama cedar, known as a high-quality building material, as well as cypress and pine.
