The Arunta are an ethnic group of Australian aboriginals who inhabit the central part of the continent. They hunted kangaroos and emus with boomerangs and spears, and also gathered food. Their social organization is characterized by the fact that each of the five subgroups, except for one, is divided into eight sections (octardigrades), and marriage regulations are in place. In religion, totem worship is prominent, and the coming-of-age ceremony is a grand one, with circumcision and fire ceremonies. The population once declined sharply due to contact with whites, but has been recovering since the 1960s.
