A Romance language spoken in the Catalonia region of Spain, with 5 to 7 million speakers. It is spoken in the neighboring regions of Aragon, Valencia, the Balearic Islands, and the Roussillon region of France. It developed from the Latin spoken in Catalonia and Roussillon, and is closely related to Spanish and Provencal, but today it differs greatly from Spanish in terms of phonology, such as the absence of ascending diphthongs (ie, ue, etc.) and the predominance of descending diphthongs (eu, au, ou, etc.), and in grammar, such as the frequent use of the compound past tense. It has changed little over time, and the differences between dialects today are also small, but it is roughly divided into two dialect groups: the west (Western Catalonia, Valencia) and the east (Eastern Catalonia, the Balearic Islands, Roussillon).

スペインのカタルニャ地方を中心に，500万～700万人以上の話し手をもつロマンス語。カタルニャ地方のほか，隣接するアラゴン地方，バレンシア地方，バレアレス諸島，フランスのルーシヨン地方にも行われる。カタルニャならびにルーシヨンに行われていたラテン語が発展したものであり，スペイン語やプロバンス語と近い関係にはあるが，現在では，昇り二重母音 (ie，ueなど) がなく，降り二重母音 (eu，au，ouなど) が多いなどの音韻面，複合過去を多用するなどの文法面で，スペイン語と大きな差異を示す。時代による変化は少く，現在の方言差も小さいが，大別して西部 (西カタルニャ，バレンシア) と東部 (東カタルニャ，バレアレス，ルーシヨン) の2つの方言群に分けられる。
