Takeminakata-no-kami

Japanese: 建御名方神 - たけみなかたのかみ

A god who appears in the mythology of the Kojiki. The son of Okuninushi-no-Kami, the ruler of the earth. "Take" means bravery. "Minakata" is said to be a variant of "Munakata" or "southern." When Takemikazuchi came from Takamagahara to take over the rulership of the earth, Yae Kotoshiro-nushi, the son of Okuninushi, agreed to the negotiations, but the other son, Takeminakata, did not agree and challenged Takemikazuchi to a contest of strength. However, he was overwhelmed by Takemikazuchi's military power and fled to Suwa in Shinano, where he agreed to hand over the land and enshrined there. This god is still enshrined at Suwa Taisha (Kamisha Maemiya in Chino City, Nagano Prefecture, Kamisha Honmiya in Suwa City, Shimosha Harumiya and Shimosha Akimiya in Shimosuwa Town). 『古事記』の神話に登場する神。地上の支配者である大国主神(オオクニヌシノカミ)の子。「たけ」は勇壮の意。「みなかた」は,「宗像」の転とも「南方」の意ともいわれる。地上の支配権を譲り受けるために建御雷(タケミカヅチ)が高天原からやってきたとき,オオクニヌシの子である八重言代主はその交渉に応じたが,もうひとりの子タケミナカタは,これに応じないでタケミカヅチに力くらべを挑んだ。しかし,タケミカヅチの武力に圧倒されて信濃の諏訪まで逃げ,国土を譲り渡すことに同意したのちにその地に鎮座した,と伝える。現在もこの神は諏訪大社(長野県茅野市の上社前宮,諏訪市の上社本宮,下諏訪町の下社春宮,下社秋宮)に祭られている。この神がタケミカヅチの相手として選ばれた理由のひとつに,その名がタケミカヅチという名に類似していることもあるだろう。<参考文献>松前健『出雲神話』,武藤武美「タケミナカタと諏訪」(『文学』1975年1月号)
