Dog race - Dog race

A betting game involving dog races. A motorized model rabbit called a dummy hare is run around the inside of an oval course with a circumference of 400 meters, and the dogs race after the rabbit. Betting tickets are sold in the same way as for horse racing. Currently, only British greyhounds are used. It is also called greyhound racing. It is said that dog racing began when British people who liked hunting had their hunting dogs compete against each other to see who was the best, but the current racing format began in the United States in 1926 and was introduced to the United Kingdom. It is most popular in the United Kingdom, where there are more than 200 large and small racecourses on the British mainland alone, and each racecourse is limited to 104 days a year, 4 hours a day, and 8 races, starting in the evening. In addition to the United Kingdom, it is popular in the United States, Australia, Thailand, and other former British colonies. In Japan, immediately after World War II, a bill to introduce dog racing was submitted to the Diet at the suggestion of the National Governors' Conference, but due to the wishes of GHQ, it was not enacted.

イヌの競走を対象とする賭(か)け事。一周400メートルの楕円(だえん)形コースの内側をダミーヘアーdummy hareとよばれる電動式の模型のウサギを走らせ、そのウサギを追ってイヌの競走を行い、競馬と同じように投票券が発売される。使用するイヌは、現在はイギリス産グレーハウンド種に限られている。グレーハウンドレースともいう。ドッグレースは、狩猟を好んだイギリス人が、互いに狩猟犬の優劣を競って競走させたことに始まるといわれるが、現行のレース形式は1926年アメリカに始まり、イギリスに伝えられた。イギリスがもっとも盛んで、イギリス本土だけで大小200余の競技場があり、開催は競技場ごとに、1年に104日以内、1日4時間8レース以内に制限されていて、夕刻から開催される。イギリスのほかアメリカ、オーストラリア、タイなどのほか、旧イギリス領の国で盛んである。日本では、第二次世界大戦直後、全国知事会議の発案で、ドッグレース法案が国会に提出されたが、GHQの意向もあって実現しなかった。
