Boyi and Shuqi (English spelling)

Japanese: 伯夷･叔斉 - はくいしゅくせい（英語表記）Bó yí，Shū qí

A wise man from China at the end of the Shang dynasty and the beginning of the Zhou dynasty. Boyi and Shuqi were the two princes of the state of Guzhu (a state in Liaoxi), but they both fled the country after abdicating the throne to each other. They once visited the court of King Chu of the Shang dynasty, but gave up on King Chu and sought refuge with King Wen of the Zhou dynasty, who was the Western Bo, and settled under him. When King Wen died and King Wu was about to raise an army to attack King Chu, the two men held back King Wu's horses and criticized him for raising an army so soon after his father's death and for attacking their lord as vassals.

中国，殷末･周初の賢人。伯夷･叔斉の2人は孤竹国(遼西にあった国)の王子であったが，互いに王位を譲りあってともに国を出奔した。一度は殷の紂（ちゆう）王の朝廷を訪れたが，紂王に見切りをつけて，西伯であった周の文王をたよってそのもとに身をおちつけた。文王が死に，武王が紂王討伐の軍を起こそうとしたとき，2人は武王の馬を引きとどめて，父の死後すぐ兵を起こすこと，また臣下でありながら主君を討伐することの不当をなじる。
