[History]
The origins of this type of ball game are thought to be very ancient, and there was a type of handball called harpaston (meaning to carry away) in ancient Greece and Rome. However, handball as a modern sport was developed at the end of the 19th century from ball games played in Sweden, Denmark, and Germany. In 1919, the German K. Scherenz systematized the rules, and the following year, the Berlin Gymnastics Federation published them.
