A perennial plant of the Saxifragaceae family found on slightly moist forest floors in mountainous regions, it is closely related to the Hydrangea genus (illustration). The aboveground stems are usually unbranched, erect, 20-70 cm tall, and covered with coarse hairs. The alternate leaves are stalked, thin, elliptical or lanceolate, pointed at both ends, and have sharp sawtooth edges. From July to September, the plant produces a corymb at the end of the stem, bearing numerous white or pale pink flowers. Around the inflorescence are a small number of decorative white to pale pink-purple petal-like flowers consisting of three sepals. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
