Galata

…In 1853, the Baroque-style Dolmabahçe Sarayı was completed along the Bosphorus, and the palace moved there. As trade with Western European countries expanded, the Galata district, known since Byzantine times as a settlement for foreign merchants, developed, and together with the neighboring Beyoğlu district, it became a new commercial and cultural center, contrasting sharply with the old city, with its forests of mosque minarets. In the new city, embassies (now consulates) of European countries lined the streets, and foreign merchants and their associated non-Muslim minority merchants set up modern shops, as well as many “hired foreigners” such as the Italian composer Giuseppe Donizetti (Gaetano’s brother). …
