Umital (sea barrel) - Umital (English spelling) doliolid

A general term for a protochordata belonging to the family Doliolidae in the order Salpes of the class Tunicate, or a single species of such a protochordata. It is found widely in the warm waters of the world's oceans and leads a free-floating lifestyle. The Doliolum denticulatum is a pale purple or red agar-like beer barrel with a body length of 3 to 6 mm. The inside of the body wall is surrounded by eight circular muscles that form a mouth at the front end and an outlet at the rear end. It contracts the circular muscles to squirt water, and uses the resulting force to move. It can have up to 100 pairs of gill slits.

尾索綱サルパ目ウミタル科Doliolidaeに属する原索動物の総称，またはそのうちの1種を指す。世界の大洋の温水域に広く分布し，浮遊生活を行う。ウミタルDoliolum denticulatumは体長3～6mmの寒天質のビヤ樽状で，淡い紫色か紅色。体壁の内側に8個の環状筋がたが状に体の周囲をとりまいており，前端に口，後端に排出口がある。環状筋を収縮して水を噴出し，その反動で移動する。鰓裂（さいれつ）は100対に達することがある。
