Sea butterfly (Argulus scutiformis)

A type of external parasite that attaches to the surface of marine fish, it is a small crustacean in the family Butterfly, order Branchioura. Sea butterflies have a larger carapace and abdomen than freshwater butterflies. The abdomen is also very broad, with a rounded posterior end that is not sharp. The body is uniformly pale blue in color, with various degrees of orange and purple-brown pigments on top. Females reach a size of about 3 cm, the largest among branchioura, but males are only about half the size of females. They are commonly found on the surface of pufferfish, sunfish, and other fish in the waters off Japan.

海産魚類の体表につく外部寄生虫の1種で，鰓尾（さいび）目チョウ科の小型甲殻類。ウミチョウは淡水産のチョウに比べて，背甲と腹部が大きい。腹部も非常に幅広く，その後端はとがらずに丸くなっている。体は一様に淡青色を帯び，その上に橙色，紫褐色の色素が種々な程度で存在する。雌は3cmくらいの大きさに達し，鰓尾類中最大であるが，雄は雌の半分くらいの大きさにすぎない。日本近海で，フグ，マンボウなどの体表にふつうに見られる。
