An ancient African state and the name of its capital. It flourished from around the 6th century BCE, succeeding the Nubian kingdom of Napata, but was destroyed by the Ethiopian kingdom of Askumu in the early 4th century CE. Its ruins are located about 150 km northeast of Khartoum in Sudan, and include pyramids, the Temple of Amun, and the Temple of Isis. Parts of it have been excavated since the early 20th century, unearthing many ironware and historical documents written in Meroitic script. → Related articles Kingdom of Kush | Nubia Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
