A group of more than 40 islands of various sizes in the Harima Nada Sea, in the eastern part of the Seto Inland Sea. They were formed when the land between Honshu and Shikoku collapsed and the Harima Nada Sea was formed, and are located northeast of Shodoshima. In ancient times, they were a strategic point on the Seto Inland Sea route, called "Ejima." In the Middle Ages, they were a base for pirates. The largest island in the group is Nishijima, which has a maximum height of 276m and is made of rhyolite. Ieshima Island, which accounts for about 60% of the population, has a maximum height of 140m and is made of slate from the Chichibu Palaeozoic Formation. Ojikajima (Tangajima) has a maximum height of 220m and is made of granite, and Bozejima has a maximum height of 102m and is made of rhyolite. The rest are small islands, including uninhabited islands, and all of them belong to Himeji City, Hyogo Prefecture. They were once known for stone quarrying, but nowadays their main industries are aquaculture and tourist fishing. The entire area belongs to the Seto Inland Sea National Park. The area is 20.27 ^km2 . Population: 8,978 (2000).

瀬戸内海東部，播磨灘にある大小四十余の島群。本州と四国との間が陥没して播磨灘ができたとき海没を免れてできたもので，小豆島の北東に位置する。古くは「えじま」と呼ばれた瀬戸内海航路の要衝。中世は海賊の根拠地。諸島中最大の島は西島で，最高点 276m。流紋岩からなる。人口の約6割を占める家島本島は最高点 140mで秩父古生層の粘板岩。男鹿島 (たんがじま) は最高点 220mで花崗岩，坊勢島は最高点 102mで流紋岩からなる。他は無人島を含む小さな島で，全島が兵庫県姫路市に属する。かつては石材切り出しで知られたが，現在は養殖と観光漁業が産業の中心。一帯は瀬戸内海国立公園に属する。面積 20.27km²。人口 8978 (2000) 。
