Ichiigashi - Ichiigashi

Japanese: イチイガシ - いちいがし
Ichiigashi - Ichiigashi

It is a large evergreen tree of the Fagaceae family (APG classification: Fagaceae) with a straight trunk that can reach a height of 25 meters. In old trees, a spiral pattern of cork layers can be seen where the gray-brown bark has fallen off. The leaves are oblanceolate with sawtooth tips. They can be distinguished from other oaks by the dense growth of short yellowish-brown hairs on the underside. The nuts ripen in the fall of the same year and are edible as they are. The cupule has six or seven layers of rings and is densely covered with brown hairs. It is found in abundance in Honshu and Kyushu west of Chiba Prefecture, as well as in the warm temperate zone of Taiwan and eastern mainland China. It prefers fertile soil, and is often found at shrines and other places. The wood is tough, and was used for boats and sterns.
