Originally a place name in London, England, it is now known as another name for the Metropolitan Police. There was a place called this name in central London, on the north bank of the River Thames, west of the current Charing Cross station of the National Railway. When England and Scotland were separate countries, there was a mansion where the Scottish king and ambassadors stayed when they visited the English royal family, so it was called Scotland's Yard. After 1603, England and Scotland came under the rule of one king (personal union), and in 1707 the two countries were united, so the mansion became unnecessary and came under government control.
