A state on the Atlantic coast of the eastern United States. Abbreviated as Md. or MD. Most of the state is part of the coastal plain of the Chesapeake Bay, but the northwestern part is part of the Appalachian Mountains. It borders the capital Washington DC, and is home to large cities such as Baltimore, so suburban agriculture such as vegetable and fruit farming has developed. Tomatoes, tobacco, potatoes, wheat, and corn are also produced in abundance. Oyster farming is popular in the Chesapeake Bay. Industries such as metals, electrical and electronic equipment, chemicals, and food processing are well developed. First settled in 1634. One of the 13 independent states, joined the Union in 1788.
