Biomass is the amount of living organisms present in a space at a given time. It is also called biomass, biomass, or biomass. It is usually expressed in weight or calories and is used to describe populations and communities.

Biomass is the amount of living organisms at a certain time point, and is the amount that exists as a result of biological production up to that point. Living organisms are constantly produced through reproduction and growth, and are constantly lost through death and predation. Technology used

Traditionally, agriculture has focused only on the yield of the desired product, and on the balance of income and expenditure in a monetary economy. Modern agriculture was established by developing agricultural technology based on these factors. However, the second oil crisis at the end of 1978 (Showa 53) triggered the idea of actively utilizing the solar energy stored as organic matter in plants, and the terms biomass and biomass energy have come into frequent use. The term is now used broadly to include the conversion of plant waste into energy and the use of unused parts other than those used for biological production. When it comes to biomass in the agricultural field, extensive exploration and research is being carried out to find the best plants to produce the maximum amount of calories from a certain area, and research is being conducted from both the perspectives of production volume and energy conversion. Topics include sugarcane, sweet potato, and cassava as raw materials for alcohol production, and eucalyptus and copaifera for their essential oil content.

Research is also being conducted to determine which plant has the highest overall yield, and napier grass has attracted attention because it is expected to produce 60 to 80 tons per hectare. However, depending on the type, it must be converted into energy as a raw material for producing alcohol or methane gas through fermentation, or it must be extracted using solvents or distilled as essential oil components. Therefore, it is necessary to thoroughly consider the balance of energy consumed and energy produced in the process of producing raw materials and converting them into energy, and how this balance will appear in the monetary economy. In such cases, it is necessary to look beyond just converting them into energy, and to search for high-added-value antibacterial substances or components that can be used as medicines, and to make a comprehensive evaluation.

Furthermore, if we are to incorporate agricultural and ecological terminology, we should understand the basic meaning of the term "biomass" and, rather than focusing solely on energy production, should consider a production system that can achieve the maximum overall production volume through a complex combination based on that concept.

ある時点にある空間に存在している生きた生物体の量をいい、生物体量、生物量、現存量ともいう。普通、バイオマスは重量あるいはカロリー量で表され、個体群や生物群集について用いられる。

　バイオマスは、あくまである時間断面における生物の量を表したもので、それまでの生物生産の結果として存在する量である。生物は、一方で繁殖や成長などによって絶えず生産され、他方では死亡や捕食などを通じて絶えず失われていく。バイオマスはこれら背反する二つの過程のなかで表されるある時点における量で、生産性あるいは生産速度と混同してはならない。海の藻場やサンゴ礁での純一次生産速度は、熱帯降雨林に匹敵するほど大きいが、バイオマスは20分の1以下である。

利用の技術

従来、農業においては目的とする生産物の収量にのみ重点が置かれ、しかも貨幣経済のなかでの収支を問題とし、それらを基調として農業技術の開発が行われて近代農業が確立された。しかし、1978年（昭和53）末からの第二次石油ショックが契機となって、植物体に有機物として蓄えられた太陽エネルギーを積極的に利用することが考えられるようになり、バイオマスとかバイオマスエネルギーという用語がしばしば用いられるようになった。そして広くは植物性廃棄物などのエネルギー化や、生物生産の目的となっている以外の未利用部分のエネルギーとしての活用を含めての意味で用いられている。農学関係でバイオマスという場合には、一定面積からの最大のカロリー生産量を期待して、どのような植物がよいかの広範囲な探索調査が進められ、生産量とエネルギー化の両面から研究が行われている。話題となっているものには、アルコール生産原料としてのサトウキビ、サツマイモ、キャッサバなどや、含有精油成分を考えてのユーカリノキ、コパイフェラなどがある。

　また、植物全体としての収量のもっとも高い植物はないかという面から探索研究が進められ、ネピアグラスは1ヘクタール当り60～80トンが見込みうるということで注目を浴びている。しかし種類によって、それぞれ発酵によるアルコールとかメタンガス生産の原料としてエネルギー化をするとか、精油成分蒸留とか溶剤による抽出を行わなければならない。したがって、原料生産とエネルギー化の過程における消費エネルギーと生産エネルギーの収支と、貨幣経済のなかでの収支がどのようになるかを、十分に検討する必要がある。また、このような場合エネルギー化のみを考えるのではなく、付加価値の高い抗菌性物質とか医薬として利用できる成分などの探索を行い、複合的にみての評価を行う必要がある。

　さらに農学上、生態学的用語を取り入れるとすれば、バイオマスという用語のもつ基本的な意味を理解し、エネルギー化のみにこだわらず、その考え方のもとに複合的な組合せによる総合的な最大生産量をあげうる生産体系を考えるべきであろう。
